Much like bad weather tore through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for United

This scoreline marked consecutive WSL losses for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to juggle league and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

The hosts, in comparison, have no such fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his side from the kickoff. This was a show of the quality from City whose potent forward line manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a excellent first half display that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This placed City completely dominant and left United disorganized. Before this match, the away side had conceded just few in this WSL season but they fell apart in the presence of the hosts' attacking flair.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were creatively abject and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to overcome any team who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a strong standing after the opening fixtures.
